Summer Reading Assignment: Incoming English 3CP

Identity Collage & Write-Up

Choose one book from the following list and complete the assignment below:

  • The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri**

  • If I Stay by Gayle Forman**

  • What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen

  • Literally by Lucy Keating

  • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

  • Mexican White Boy by Matt de la Pena

In all of these books, the main character is struggling with his/her identity for various reasons (cultural conflict, expectations/pressures of others, fate vs freewill, etc.). He/She is trying to forge his/her own path, find his/her own place in the world, and define his/her own identity without giving in to how others try to define him/her. This is a journey that most anyone can relate to on some level. For this assignment, you will be creating an identity collage for the main character and for yourself and typing a written explanation.

**If you choose The Namesake or If I Stay, you have an additional assignment because they have been turned into movies and we want to make sure you have read the book and not just watched the movie.

(1) Your poster must be at least 11 ½ by 17 inches in size

(2) On one half of the poster, create a collage for the main character of the book you chose

  1. Include the character’s name, book title, and book author

  2. Decorate your poster with a variety of artwork (hand drawn, cut from magazines, printed, etc.) to represent the character’s personality, appearance, likes, dislikes, hobbies, ethnicity, culture, values, beliefs, etc. - anything that is essential to the character’s identity.

  3. Include captions if necessary to explain more abstract concepts/images.

  4. Include at least 5 quotes from the book (cite page numbers).

  5. Fill in as much of the blank space as possible

(3) On the other half of the poster, create a collage to represent your identity.

(4) Write at least 300 words (or about one page) explaining the character’s top 4 values/beliefs that are essential to who he/she is as a person and how he/she demonstrates these values throughout the book.

(5) Write at least 300 words (or about one page) comparing your top 4 values to those of the character

  1. Did you develop similar values because you went through similar experiences or were raised in similar ways? Do you express your values in similar or different ways? Etc.

**(6) Additional assignment for If I Stay & Namesake** Write at least  300 words (or about one page) comparing/contrasting the similarities and differences between the book and the movie.

All written assignments will need to be typed and submitted to within the first two weeks of school.
