Dear SSFHS Community -

Te below message and attached memo are sent to you on behalf of SSFHS Counseling Department.  Please feel free to share with friends and family if you think they will be great guest speakers to talk with students about their career!  We would love to have them participate in our Career Day!

Dear Prospective Participant:

South San Francisco High School is hosting a Career Day on March 1st, 2019, and your participation would be quite valuable to our students. We need your assistance and expertise to provide our students with current information about the employment opportunities in your industry.

The Career Day will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. We have about 1350 students; all students will have the opportunity to attend two 25 minute presentations.  If you choose to participate, we would like you to inform two different groups of students about the opportunities available in your industry, as well as, the education and training required; be prepared to answer their questions. Please be prepared to discuss careers in your field ranging from those with minimal additional education to those requiring college degrees and beyond. Using audio-visual materials and handouts is strongly encouraged and will help our high school students to better understand and remember your brief meeting.

If you would like to participate, please complete the following form by Friday, February 15th, 2019

https://goo.gl/forms/66zePkfqNlrjP9bi2.

We ask that you inform us of any materials or technological devices you may need in your presentation. Please plan to arrive between 10:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. for coffee, juice, and pastries (this will also allow you time to setup before the first students arrive at 10:45 am). You may park in our parking lot and enter through the main entrance, sign in at the front office, and proceed to the library where you will receive your designated classroom for you to hold your presentation. Thank you for your support and I hope to see you at the South San Francisco High School 2019 Career Day!

If you have any questions, please contact Andy Lei (alei9656@gmail.com 415-816-7882) or Marion A. Shine (mshine@ssfusd.org 650-877-8754 ext 6616).

Congratulations to the following dedicated theatre arts students who have earned induction into the International Thespian Society (ITS) which is the honor society for secondary school theatre students.  These students were active members of SSFHS Troupe 7180 in the 2017-18 school year.  Each Thespian inductee has completed over 100 hours of excellent work in theatre arts and related disciplines.  In doing so, they have acquired essential 21st century life and career skills that include creativity and innovation, critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and effective communication.  Our inductees now join the ranks of over 2.3 million Thespians and Thespian alumni, including Jane Lynch, John Goodman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Tom Hanks.

Badminton Players of the Year: Jakin and Raeka Lin

By Nathan Mollat Daily Journal Staff

A year after winning the 2016 Central Coast Section and CIF Northern California girls’ doubles badminton titles, Jakin and Raeka Lin were nowhere to be found in the 2017 postseason.

“Last year, we had a history competition that went to state (finals),” said Jakin Lin, who recently graduated South San Francisco High School. “It was the same weekend as the PAL tournament, so we couldn’t play.”

Despite being one best doubles teams in Northern California, the only way to qualify for the section tournament is through a league tournament. Since they did not compete in the PALs in 2017, they were ineligible to play at CCS.

“This year, we chose badminton over history,” Jakin said.

Much to the chagrin of the rest of Northern California. After capturing the PAL title, the Lin sisters won their second CCS championship in three years. They could not duplicate their 2016 Nor Cal championship in 2018. They did, however, make it to the finals and solidify their selection as the Daily Journal’s Badminton Players of the Year.

“We kind of knew we wanted to play together again,” Jakin said. “We just wanted to live up to what we did in 2016 and I wanted to play with my sister one last time.”

As anyone with siblings knows, it can sometime be a burden to be with your brother or sister all the time. So to avoid any kind of burnout on the badminton court, the sisters split their play during the regular season. Raeka continued to play singles, moving into the No. 1 spot, while Jakin teamed with Katrina Hui to play at No. 1 girls’ doubles.

“I just wanted to rely on myself,” said Raeka Lin, who will enter her senior year at South City in the fall. “Whenever I play doubles, I always feel like I had to depend on someone else.”

Jakin, on the other hand, was looking to change things up for her senior year. After three years of playing singles during the regular season, she wanted a different challenge during her last season of high school.

“For senior year I wanted to play doubles and get closer to my teammates,” Jakin said. “Sometimes when we play too much together, we start to argue a bit more. … [Playing doubles together all season] would have been too much.”

But once the postseason rolled around, the two became the dynamic duo. The pair was seeded No. 2 in the CCS girls’ doubles tournament, behind Milpitas’ Zoe Lu and Katelin Ngo. The Lins cruised through their first two matches, winning in straight sets, setting up a winner’s bracket final with the Milpitas duo. The Lins dropped the first set, 21-10, but rallied to win the next two sets, 21-9 and 21-13, to move into the championship match.

They had to wait for Lu and Ngo to come through the consolation bracket of the double-elimination final to meet Lu and Ngo again in the championship round. And like they did in their first meeting, the South City tandem dropped the first set. But like they did in their previous match, the Lins finished strong, winning the CCS title with a 15-21, 21-16, 21-11 victory.

“Since we both knew our opponents, and had played against them in (junior) tournaments, we knew it was going to be tough,” Raeka said of facing the top-seeded Trojans.

By making the CCS finals, the Lins had already assured themselves a spot in the Nor Cal tournament and, like they did in 2016, the Lins made a beeline to the Nor Cal championship match. After a first-round bye, the Lins cruised in their second-round match, winning 21-16, 21-11 and again in the semifinals, 21-15, 21-14 to advance to the title match.

Unlike the 2016 tournament, the 2018 Nor Cal tournament changed to a single-elimination format. So when the Lins got to the 2016 championship match through the winner’s bracket, they had to be beaten twice to be denied the crown. They did lose that first match, but rebounded to win the title in the finale.

The 2018 edition was single-elimination, however, and while the Lins advanced to the championship match, they were denied by a team from Mission San Jose-Fremont. It was only their second loss in 16 CCS and Nor Cal matches.

“I think our playing styles are pretty different. I’m more about smashing in the back and my sister is better at placing the bird,” Jakin said. “Together we make a pretty good team.”

Dear South San Francisco High School Community,

As you may be aware, a vehicle accident occurred early this morning, prior to the start of school, on B Street across from the high school parking lot. The South San Francisco Police Department immediately responded to the scene of the accident, and traffic was temporarily diverted away from B Street. No students or staff members were in any danger.

Per the South San Francisco Police Department press release, at approximately 7:10 a.m. the police department received multiple calls that a male subject was ramming his vehicle into other parked vehicles at the 500 block of El Camino Real, in a local business parking lot.  The male suspect then drove out of the parking lot, across El Camino Real and through the parking lot of South San Francisco High School.  The driver recklessly continued through the parking lot at a high rate of speed striking a cement pillar and eventually became disabled after colliding into another parked vehicle and adjacent fence on B Street.  The driver exited the vehicle and climbed a nearby electrical pole where he was located by responding emergency personnel.  After a short time, the subject fell to the ground and was taken into custody without further incident.

There were no injuries reported during the incident and the investigation is on-going at this time. The cause and motive for the incident is yet to be determined.

School at South San Francisco High School was not impacted by this incident, and no students were affected.

Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the South San Francisco Police Department at (650) 877-8900.

Attention students in the spring musical!

Once again, congratulations on such a beautiful production this past weekend. However, all good things must come to an end. Monday, March 26th, will be strike. We need bodies to come throughout the afternoon and into the evening to take apart the set. We will start right after school and go until 6:30. The technical directors (Patrick Lucy and Andrew Hernandez) will be coming in at 5ish. We start on the little things and get to the bigger things when the gentlemen come. If you left stuff during the shows, this will be the time for you to pick up whatever you left along with cleaning up the theater. The more people that come, the more work we can complete in one day instead of two days. Thank you and see everyone tomorrow!

This message is sent to you on behalf of voter registration:
Dear Parent, Guardian, and Students:
Many people are surprised to learn that California has one of the lowest rates of voter registration of any state in the country.  Don’t take my word for it.  You can check out Table 4a in this webpage from the US Census.  The chart on that page is a wake-up call for all of us.
Now for some great news:  California has laws to encourage voter registration.  We have pre-registration for young people who are 16 or 17 years old.  We also have online voter registration, which makes it very easy for people who are eligible to register or pre-register to vote.  Or, please check out out school website and click on the button!

Attention all students:

Fire alarm units are placed on buildings for a reason: to alert there is a fire and to evacuate.

Pulling a false fire alarm disrupts school and students' education. It is also against the law with consequences of up to $5000 fine and an arrest which could lead to imprisonment. School consequences result in a five day suspension for disruption of the entire school.  Any person who is involved in the false fire alarms will result in both - school consequences and dealing with the law.

ENGLISH
What are the CAASPP results?
This summer, you should have received the results of your student California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) testing. These are the tests our students took last spring. The tests are based on the Common Core, a set of academic standards, or learning goals, for math and English that define what our students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade.

What do the CAASPP results mean?
The CAASPP report will show an overall score for your student in each subject, ranging from 2,000 to 3,000. This score shows if a student met, did not meet or exceeded expectations for their grade. The second page of the report includes a further breakdown of that score, providing individualized information on your student’s academic strengths and potential challenges. The report will also compare your student’s results from last spring’s test to his/her results in previous grades, if available. For more information on how to read your score report, go to: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/caasppssreports.asp
How will my child’s test results used?
The test results provide you and the school more detailed information on where your child needs more support, or where they could be accelerated in the future. You can work together with your child’s new teacher(s) and/or school administers to identify subjects where your child could improve, how you can better support your child at home, and focus on making progress in the coming school year. Testing is important, but it’s only one way to gauge how students are doing. Your child’s scores will be taken into account as part of a broader look at their academic progress.

Additionally, the California Department of Education will soon be releasing summaries of how our students performed as a school, district, county, and state. Once released, the summaries will be available here: http://caaspp.cde.ca.gov/. This information can be used to compare your school to other schools and to district and statewide results. It will also help to show you how your child performed on the test relative to other students. This information will also be combined with other data about our school in the state's new accountability system that will come out later this fall. The new system will provide the public with a broader set of outcome data including graduation rates, chronic absentee rates, suspension rates, English learner progress, and a measure of college and career readiness. This data dashboard will help our school in setting its priorities for the future so that we can focus on the areas of greatest need.
