Dear Parents,

Please be aware of the following report of suspicious activity in the area of Fourth Lane and Eucalyptus: This morning, students reported that yesterday, Thursday, March 9th, after school, an unidentified male individual in a vehicle was parked as the students were walking by on the way home from school. From the inside of his car, the man knocked on his car window and asked the students to open the door for him, indicating that he was stuck in the vehicle. The students did not open the door and ran away from the area. It was observed that the man moved to the driver’s seat and began to start the vehicle. The students were unharmed and were not approached again after running away from the area.

The incident did not occur on or near any of our school campuses, and the man has not yet been identified. South San Francisco Police were immediately notified and are currently investigating the encounter.

The man is described as a white male, overweight, approximately 30 to 40 years old, who may have a mustache. The vehicle is described as a white van that may have been a Chevy Astro Van, 2004 model.

We ask that parents and guardians remind their students to be cautious of strangers, to be aware of their surroundings, and to report any suspicious activity or any interactions that make them uncomfortable. We also encourage the “buddy system” as much as possible when walking to and from school.

Should you have any questions or information about this incident, you may contact the South San Francisco Police Department at 650-877-8900.

Congratulations to our new Robotics Club!  This is a brand new club that started Fall 2016.  They worked very hard to design a robot that could pick up a ball and toss it up into a basket!  Of February 4, the club  entered a tournament.  Here is what the president of the club, Raymond Lin, said,

" The Robotics team entered the First Tech Challenge Robotics Competition and competed at the Daly City Qualifying tournament at Jefferson High School. It took place on the 4th of February. We won two games out of five and took 19th place out of 28 teams. I'm proud of us, especially considering that it was our first ever competition."

Congratulations again to the new club and the members!  Thanks to Physics/Earth Science teacher, Mr. Trautman, for being the advisor of the club and thanks to one of our parents, Mr. Lieberman, who has been helping the students!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!
I understand that the Night Theme Diary Project is due next week and some people have questions on how to format this whole thing with using Microsoft Word and Google Docs along with how to submit this project.
1) If you remember, I told you that I need a hard copy of the project. It even says it on the layout of the project as well. So PLEASE submit a hard copy of your project on the day that it is due. Everyone submit their project by next Friday, February 24th before the end of the school day. I know there is a block schedule set for that day and there is a possible guest coming into the school that Friday. So I would like everyone to submit their projects during lunch or by the end of the day. I will be leaving campus by 4PM next Friday. If it is late or you do not do the project, it will be a zero overall.
2) In terms of typing this out, you can format perfectly in order to create the book effect. I can give you the instructions on how to approach it through Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
- Microsoft Word: You click onto the Page Layout Icon on the top and change the Orientation. It should be changed to Landscape instead Portrait. Following that, an icon over states "Columns" in which you put in three. From there you should be able to have a column for the Theme response, one for the picture and the other for the Chapter response.
- Google Docs: Go to file and click onto Page Setup and switch it to landscape. After that, you go to Format and click on Columns to create three columns. Same as word in appearance overall.
If you have any questions or concerns, just e-mail me as soon as possible. I want you to be successful and creative in your theme diaries.

Financial Aid for Dream Act students remains legal in California.  The California Dream Act is a state law, separate and distinct from the federal DACA program.

Schools and County Education officials were sent a letter from Tom Torlakson, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Lupita Cortez Alcalá, the Executive Director of California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) regarding the DREAM Act and Student Aid in California.

Please see the links below for more information, and for any questions.  We've also attached the PDF file of the original letter.

March 2 is the priority financial aid filing deadline for most colleges and universities and the absolute deadline for submission of the Cal Grant application (CA Dream Act Application + GPA).

If you need assistance, please see your counselor.

Congratulations to Ms. Dianna Ariani!

As many of you may know, Ms. Ariani teaches a Work Experience Class which includes inviting guest speakers and preparing students for the real world.  In the Winter 2016 Issue of the First National Bank Newsletter, an article was written about her.  Below is the typed article:

"When a Bank Truly Partners with the Community, Good Things Happen"

Nobody knows this better than Dianna Ariani, who is the daughter of Romolo Ariani, one of the founding fathers of FNB.  Now a teacher at South San Francisco High School, her job is to help prepare her students for the "real world," including financial issues.  that's where FNB helps.

Over the years her Work Experience class has included guest appearances by FNB CEO Tom McGraw, who explained the basics of finance and, perhaps more importantly, help students understand that success is possible even when the path may not be clear.

"Tom's career path wasn't typical for finance," Ariani said, noting that his career includes numerous acting jobs in feature films, television series, and television commercials.  "His message is about being able to take that leap and not being afraid to try something new and to become a lifelong learner.  That's one of our goals in the class and he demonstrates that."

Ariani meets with her students once a week to discuss their jobs and visits their work sites to speak with their supervisors.  the class covers safety on the job, taxes, personal fiance, career planning and more.

"Tom helps students feel like they could go off and do whatever their hearts desire,' she said. 'It's confidence building.  and any time you can get a high school student to think about banking, that's good.  Banks are going to be their financial reality, and Tom helps demystify things."

Tom McGraw, Chief Executive Officer commented, "It is refreshing to see so many bright young minds.  Dianna's class is a real dose of reality for these young adults."

Congratulations to SSFHS Jimmy Wen!

He received 1st place/1st prize for entering a Bots competition.  Per Jimmy, "The bots were judged based on how easy it was to use, how well it addressed a social issue and how much improvement there was compared to the original bot that we made in a workshop. My team's bot addresses crimes that are within 100 feet of cars, chatting with drivers and contacting authorities if there is a problem. The actual Bot v Bot competition itself featured bots interacting with each other in front of a panel of judges and the audience. Judges decided which bot would make to the next round based on their overall language processing capabilities. I'm not allowed to go into much detail, because it's a classified idea that IBM might work with."
Way to go, Jimmy!

Dear Junior Students, Parents, Faculty, and Staff:

This email is being sent to you on behalf of Assistant Principal Mr. Al Mack:

On Wednesday, November 2, 2016, all juniors will take the PSAT. This is an early release day so all juniors will test during period 1-4. The morning of November 2, student names and testing room locations will be posted on the Administration buildings. The teachers proctoring the test are Ms. Sutter, Ms. Marder, Ms. Johnson, Ms. Silicani, Ms. Boese, Mr. Flores, Mr. Navarro, Ms. Stearman, and 4 guest teachers.

Students: Good luck to all junior students and thank you to all who are assisting with the schoolwide Junior PSAT! Please note:  Junior students who have opted out of the PSAT in advance, will report to assigned classroom which will be posted, too. If you have any further questions or concerns please email Mr. Mack at amack@ssfusd.org.

Please see the Student Test Day Checklist below:

Student Test Day Checklist
There are only a few things you really need to bring on test day and a lot of things you’ll be better off leaving at home.

What to Bring

  • Two No. 2 pencils with erasers
  • An approved calculator (see attached)
  • Valid school- or government-issued photo ID (for students not testing at their own school and home-schooled students).
  • Social Security number (optional)

What Not to Bring

  • Any devices, including smartwatches, that can be used to record, transmit, receive or play back audio, photographic, text, or video content
  • Protractors, compasses, rulers
  • Highlighters, colored pens, colored pencils
  • Pamphlets or papers of any kind
  • Dictionaries or other books — there are no exceptions, even if English is not your first language
  • Food and drinks — including bottled water — unless approved by the College Board’s Services for Students with Disabilities. Learn more about testing with accommodations.

Your school counselor can share a complete list of prohibited devices — just ask to see the Official Student Guide.

During the Test

You will be allowed to have only these items on your desk:

  • A test book
  • An answer sheet
  • No. 2 pencils with erasers
  • An approved calculator — during one of the math sections only

Turn Off All Electronic Devices

You’ll need to turn off all electronic devices during the test and even during breaks. This includes cellphones. Be sure to turn off your watch alarm, if you have one.

Why? Test centers are serious about security and quiet, so prohibited devices — which include cellphones, tablets, and MP3 players — must be turned off and put under your desk. Better yet: Leave them at home.

Attention all students:

Fire alarm units are placed on buildings for a reason: to alert there is a fire and to evacuate.

Pulling a false fire alarm disrupts school and students' education. It is also against the law with consequences of a $5000 fine and an arrest. School consequences result in a five day suspension for disruption of the entire school.  Any person who is involved in the false fire alarms will result in both - school consequences and dealing with the law.

Congratulations to James H. Coleman and Raymond Lin who have been named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program!  A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, were presented by Dr. Rapaido to these scholastically talented seniors!

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more that 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

"The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson from NMSC.  "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.  We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

To the Parents and Students of the Class of 2018,

This year, SSFHS administration has arranged for all members of the Junior Class to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, commonly referred to as the PSAT/NMSQT, free of charge.  The examination will be administered on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, during periods 1-4 (8:16-11:34 early release bell schedule).

Taking the PSAT helps students prepare for the SAT, which most of our students will take in the late spring semester of their junior year, or the fall semester of their senior year.  In addition, students who do well on the PSAT may qualify for college scholarships through the National Merit Program.  We are very happy to be able to offer this opportunity to all of our eleventh graders this year.

To prepare students for the PSAT, we are offering afterschool preparation classes!

When?  During the weeks Oct 11-Oct 27, 2016

Cost?  FREE and voluntary!

Who can attend?  Any junior student can drop in as much as needed

How often can a junior attend?  You can attend as many classes as you can or want

Dear Students,

It is almost time for AP test scores to be released!  If you were enrolled in AP classes last semester and took any of the AP exams, you will soon be able to access your AP exam scores.  You will need to create a College Board account at:

apscore.collegeboard.org/scores

in order to access scores (some students may have accounts from last year or taking the SAT or PSAT).  You should set up your account NOW in order to avoid delays accessing your scores in July.   Please see apscore.collegeboard.org/scores for the detailed schedule of when scores are accessible.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rapaido, Principal

Dear parents, guardians and alumni:

We have a wonderful opportunity to team up with TEALS to bring computer science courses to our students.  TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools) is a grassroots program that recruits, mentors and places passionate high tech professionals into high school classes as part-time teachers.  The professional brings his or her subject knowledge and will join one of our classroom teachers in a team-teaching model. TEALS provides training for both parties as well as course outlines based on successful college courses.

South San Francisco High School has been accepted by TEALS for the upcoming 2016-17 school year.  We will offer two courses: “Introduction to Computer Science” and “Advanced Placement Computer Science.”  The introductory class is based on the award winning UC Berkeley CS10 course and is adapted specifically for high schools in conjunction with UC Berkeley.  The other course will prepare students to take the College Board’s AP Computer Science A exam in May of 2017.

In order to offer these courses, South San Francisco High School is seeking to recruit volunteers from the Computer Science or Software Engineering fields to support these courses with our teachers.  South San Francisco High School would hold the courses 1st period (done by 9:12AM) to permit the volunteers to get to their regular jobs.

If you or someone you know works in the Computer Science or Software Engineering field and would be willing to help us build a successful Computer Science program, please contact Dr. Cynthia Rapaido crapaido@ssfusd.org or Ms. Rebecca Lee  rlee@ssfusd.org .

You can read more about TEALS on their website at http://www.tealsk12.org.  I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to hearing from many of you.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Rapaido, Ed.D.

Principal

Dear Students,

If you plan to attend college, you will need to take the required high school courses that prepare you for college.  Be sure to see your counselor to pick the right classes.  If you are a freshman, now is the time to start the planning. Upper classman, it is still not too late to prepare.  Keep reading below...

One of the other requirements is to score well on the SAT (test) or ACT (test) as well as have good grades (3.0 GPA and above!).

Since James Fong and Magdalene Lo did really well on the PSAT, I asked them to submit to me their words of advice that I can share with all of you.  Please take the time to read over the attachment from James Fong.

Juniors class, the PSAT will be given on Wednesday, Oct 28.  Please take the test seriously so you have a score that represents you!  You can then have an idea of how you can better prepare for the big one, the SAT.

Feel free to ask your teachers, counselors, administration how they prepared for college or test taking tips.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rapaido, Principal
